IKI
Understated elegance
Berggård Amundsen
IKI is a Japanese fusion restaurant located in Sørenga, Oslo, focusing on quality, healthiness, taste, service, and ambiance. The atmosphere is casual yet elegant, with a vision to always surprise guests by offering something unexpected. The name, logo, and visual identity are inspired by the aesthetic Japanese concept of "Iki," dating back to the Edo period – the ruling samurai class's attempt to limit visible material wealth – a concept deeply rooted in Japanese traditional aesthetics, philosophy, and way of life. "Iki" symbolizes a refined and understated elegance, reflecting the efforts put into subtle and minimalist actions and appearances.
"By too flagrant a display of his affluence, a townsman ran the risk of having his wealth confiscated. A merchant's home therefore was likely to have had an unassuming exterior, yet to have been full of treasures. He might have worn a sober, plain wool kimono — with an exquisite silk lining. Opulence was channeled into subtle details."
